Listening to the Land + Nature Based Meditation

Updated: Aug 8

Take a tour of my New Homestead on 5 acres in the mountains!

I had a lot to learn about this new zone, the Land, the sun, the slopes, and the overall patterns of the Land. What creatures inhabited it? How did the creek rise and fall? What did the seasons feel like? I've only been used to gardening in a tropical zone 9b. I'm in 6b, and temperatures can get to 1 degree! So, I had to learn patience in allowing time to teach these answers. In the process, I would read about Permaculture and spend time listening to the Land.

I began walking out the boundaries of where I imagined the Garden. It's an old Irish tradition to walk the edges of the Land annually, as it was thought to help avoid disputes with neighbors. Traditional land healers worldwide would often beat a drum doing the same walkabout, setting intentions out loud to the Land. I did the same using a song, singing my tune to the words of "This is our Land which we aim to Heal. This is our Land which we aim to Grow. This is our Land which we aim to Love. "

I also practiced what is known as the "Listening Cure." Everything has energy frequencies, and I firmly believe that the trees, the ground, and the animals can all resonate emotionally, perhaps not as complex words could describe, but emotions nonetheless. To start a new relationship with this Land, I needed to listen to any joy or pain from its past.

Try this Nature Based Meditation:

There are many ways to meditate. This is what I did to connect with my Land.

Please make sure to secure some time that can allow you to be quiet and calm. Find a Tree that you connect with or perhaps has had a clear perspective on the past of the Land with a story to tell.

Barefoot, stand or sit against the tree. Imagine energetic roots extending from your feet, hands, and whole body, immersing into the tree. If you could ask them for protection, whatever power you connect with, please don't hesitate to ask. Humans are sensitive to negative frequencies and sometimes decode them unnecessarily in their brains. So request this boundary of a sacred space.

Close your eyes and observe your breath. Imagine the roots you've established through your feet, hands, and body extending more profoundly into the ground and the tree. Visualize a white light shooting out through your extensions. Breathe.

Think of a cherished moment in your life, one that brings you joy. This will reset your mind's space for listening to the tree and ground which you're attached. Once that image becomes clear, your smile within opens up the canvas for what the Land may share. It may be beautiful, happy, dark, or sad. Please don't judge any of it. Just listen.

You can continue the conversation with your Land as you walk around it in the coming days, months, and forever.
